The In Vitro Meat Cookbook
Crane origami, knitted steak, bloody meat sorbet. These are just a number of dishes from the Kweekvlees Kookboek. The bizarre and futuristic dishes consist entirely of cultured meat. They raise important questions such as: What is the future of meat? What is the relationship between people, nature and technology? And are we open to completely different eating habits?
Most meat that we eat is produced by the bio-industry. However, this industry has a lot of disadvantages. It causes animal suffering, is unhealthy, uses massive amounts of land and water, and emits a huge amount of greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane. It’s important to think about alternative foods. What do we eat in a sustainable world?

The Microbial Vending Machine
You can’t see them, but millions of tiny microorganisms live around us. Such as bacteria, algae and fungi. The Microbial Vending Machine investigates how these organisms can be used by biotechnology (technology based on biology) for new, completely natural products and materials. Perfume, medicine, leather, energy drink: in this former FEBO snack machine, they are all available.
We consume all day long: food, drinks, clothing, cosmetics, electronics, household items, gifts, et cetera. All those things and materials are often not sustainable or biodegradable. No wonder the plastic soup is getting bigger. It is important to think about alternative types of materials we could start using. Which materials do we use in a sustainable world?

Our wardrobes are full of fast fashion: fast, cheap and fashionable, but also extremely polluting. For example, one pair of jeans requires thousands of liters of water. And then we haven’t yet talked about land use, transportation and packaging. So it’s important to think about different types of clothes. What clothes do we wear in a sustainable world?

C.O.S.A.S. (City of Sounds and Silence)
Ssst. Do you hear that? Join this sound scape and take a walk through the city of the future. A city that is peaceful and busy, familiar and unknown, utopian and dystopian at the same time. But at the very least a city where fossil fuels, such as oil, coal and gas, are no longer used. Listen and imagine this city: What does it look like? How does it smell? How does it feel? It’s up to you.
Steaming factories, busy roads and full cowsheds: we emit a huge amount of greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane. These greenhouse gases arise from the burning of fossil fuels. So it is important to think about other ways to generate our energy. What energy do we use in a sustainable world?

Bob & Bits
This time there are no stuffed animals or watches for the taking. These gold-painted residual materials symbolize the value and necessity of reuse, recycling and upcycling. Not only with regard to the things we use, but also with the art we make. This “gripping machine” therefore references to well-known works of art. Can you spot them?
Art can inspire us to make more sustainable choices. But how sustainable is art itself? The materials used, such as paint, are sometimes quite polluting and a lot is thrown away during the making process. So it’s important to think about the way we make art. What art do we make in a sustainable world?

The Great Decline 2
These colorful seeds are not arranged randomly. They lay in the form of the blueprint of the Global Seed Vault in Spitsbergen (Norway). As many types of seeds as possible are stored there, including those from important food crops. A kind of “Noah’s Ark” in case a disaster happens. The pattern is also a reminiscent of an electronic circuit board. Are we able to save the traces of nature?
Just like climate change, the decrease in biodiversity (the variety of plants and animals) is a major challenge. And the two have a lot to do with each other. Due to the temperature rises, certain plants and animals face with survival issues. They become extinct. And that also has major consequences for people. It is therefore important to think about how we can treat and relate to nature differently. How do we deal with nature in a sustainable world?

Smog Free Ring
This ring has a diamond that is made of smog. The smog was removed from the air in Rotterdam by the Smog Free Tower: a 7 meter high tower that, like a vacuum cleaner, sucks up dirty particles and makes the air cleaner locally. 1000 m3 of dirty air is filtered for each Smog Free Ring. That’s nice, because the dirty air would otherwise end up in our lungs.
Air pollution is largely caused by traffic. Cars, vans, scooters, trucks, ships and planes: they emit an enormous amount of CO2 and harmful substances. So it is important to think about other ways of traveling. How do we travel in a sustainable world?
