This academic year (2023-2024) we are developing a pop-up Klimaatmuseum at the UvA, together with students. The opening will take place in May 2024, with installations, art and programs.
The mission? Making the climate crisis more comprehensible and tangible, and offering surprising and inspiring perspectives, so that we can move more actively and urgently towards a sustainable world.
In the Klimaatmuseum you will discover, among other things, what climate research is being done at the UvA across various faculties. The multidisciplinary approach will provide new insights on the topic.

This is a project for and by students. In October we started collecting research conducted at the UvA on climate to develop the project’s narrative. Ideas for museum installations are then devised and tested, so that the content can be conveyed in an educational and interactive way. At the same time, artworks are being curated and various programs are being prepared. Finally, all the ideas will be realized and produced, and the pop-up Klimaatmuseum will be visitable from May to August 2024.
Check the updates below.
Update #4
In collaboration with VOX-POP (the creative space of the University of Amsterdam) we are looking for existing artwork from emerging artists across all disciplines to exhibit as part of the pop-up, opening 16th of May 2024.
Update #3
On December 20, we presented the concept of the pop-up museum at the UvA: radical connection. The team talked about the process, what we have done so far, how we got to the concept, what it entails and what the next steps are.
Also very important: we have decided on the date of the opening, which will take place in VOX-POP in the University Quarter. Put May 16, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in your calendar!
Update #2
On December 4, students from various courses came up with a number of very cool prototypes for the museum. They brainstormed in groups how to convert scientific content into a museum form, such as an interactive installation.
Beforehand, lecturer and researcher in Recent History Ruud van Dijk gave a talk about climate in relation to conflict. Very interesting.
We will organize more workshops in 2024. Keep an eye on our social media and the agenda on the UvA website, and sign up. Your idea might end up in the museum!
Update #1
We want to hear from the UvA students about their hopes and concerns regarding the climate crisis so that the project can be developed to speak directly to them. Currently we are conducting quantitive and qualitative research on this.
Come to the Oudemanhuispoort, and share your thoughts with us!
